Islam during the Crusades
After Shirkuh died in March, Saladin took control of Egypt. He reformed taxes according to orthodox Islamic law and founded colleges. When the Shi’i Fatimid caliph al-‘Adid died in 1171,Saladin put Egypt under the Sunni caliphate in Baghdad. Nur-ad-Din had become a sultan; but he died in 1174, and Saladin married his widow.
