Al-Hasan al-Basri said a group of people claimed to love Allah, so He sent down the verse “Say O Muhammad If you truly love Allah, then follow me so that Allah loves you” (3:31) as a test for them.

“O you who believe! Obey Allah and Obey the Messenger and make not vain your deeds.” (Soorah Muhammad 47:33)

…and if loyal slave of Allah asks me, I will give him; and if he seeks refuge with Me, I will grant him refuge.” (Saheeh Bukhari)

If ally of Allah cannot be sure whether it is in accordance with the Prophet’s message or at variance with it, he must refrain from believing it or applying it.
